    Hi, thank you for this video. At the end, when you sauteed and ate them, were these mushrooms boiled first? Or just cleaned and sauteed before being eaten? I'm wondering if they should always be boiled before sauteing or not? TY! 🙂

      @cynthiafreeman4543 I have never boiled them.... just clean and sautéed. I only eat fresh fruiting bodies. Hope that helps, and thanks for watching.

    I found one yesterday on a tree that was solid white, and has quite a bit of moisture. How long does it normally take to ripen?

    • @WildMeatLetsEat

      Three or four days, depending on the weather... sometimes a little longer. Hopefully, the fly will stay away until then. It seems we are always racing to beat the bugs.

    While hiking on Aug 1st, I found a huge, beautiful, orange mushroom on the side of an oak tree. I thought it might be chicken of the woods. On Aug 3rd, I felt confident to give it a try. I went back to cut off a piece and every last bit was gone.

    This is one of the best videos I have watched. It makes me feel more confident in what I need to do when foraging this type of mushroom. But I still have more questions to be answered. Should they be completely orange? The ones we harvested are not.

    • @WildMeatLetsEat
      @WildMeatLetsEat 8 днів тому

      No, not necessarily... each flush will very in their orange color. A younger flush tends to have more yellow or pink/white on the outer margins but changes as the mushroom fully develops. If you go to my channel page, there's a lot of different chicken of the woods vids that should help you understand the different stages. I hope that helps, and thanks for watching!!

    Everything I’ve read says since cherry is a hardwood you can eat it from a cherry tree. Was that a mistake saying you can’t?

    • @WildMeatLetsEat
      @WildMeatLetsEat Місяць тому

      No, not a mistake... however, you can eat it from a cherry tree... I don't. However, I know plenty of people who have had no problems when found on a cherry tree. Years ago, when I first started mushroom hunting, I was taught to avoid any tree that blooms... keep in mind that field guides and old timers were the most prevalent way to learn. With there being roughly 26 verities of COW, there's a lot of variables. COW is a beginner mushroom, and most beginners don't know that. Blanket statements are used to ensure safety. Cherry tree leaves can be toxic if ingested... the leaves contain cyanogenic glycosides and can release hydrogen cyanide if consumed in large amounts. We know that COW can absorb the oils, for example, a eucalyptus tree, and become toxic. So is it possible the oils from a cherry tree can do the same thing... I don't know, but it certainly seems reasonable to me. Can you eat COW from a cherry tree... yes. I think the better question is, should you. With any wild mushroom, it's better to be safe. I hope that helps, and thanks for watching!!

    So just to make sure I understand: you can keep any parts that are black stained on it when you cook and eat right? Or should I cut them off when preparing

    • @WildMeatLetsEat
      @WildMeatLetsEat Місяць тому

      When you harvest them, cut, clean, and trim... they will start to turn black. I usually eat them the same day I harvest... the longer you wait, the darker they get. Yes... it's almost impossible to eat them before turning black. The bruising will not hurt you... it's not esthetically pleasing, but it's okay to eat. Thanks for watching, and happy hunting to ya!!

    • @WildMeatLetsEat
      @WildMeatLetsEat 3 місяці тому

      Yes, it can be too old... I would avoid any TT with mold on the fruiting body. Mold is your enemy when it comes to mushrooms. Sometimes, it will be brittle with no mold... that would be another time to pass... too old. Fresh is always best. I hope that helps, and thanks for watching!

    Unrelated to this video , do you have any experience with burdock root ? Tincture or tea ? Also the other night I ran low on past blue ribbon beer and I thought to myself, well you know my mushroom tincture have alcohol in them so why not take a swig. To make a long story short , I woke the next morning with a strange white web like substance covering my head and an unusual desire to seek out a mossy place in the woods and take a nap .I guess I may have overdone the previous night a bit . thanks, Mark
